News

10 July 2020 I have just attended a webinar on the Ofqual Consultation on proposed changes to the 2021 GCSEs due to Covid19. For MFL the changes may effect the Speaking Component of the exam. Parents and carers can respond to the consultation on .gov.uk (for all the subjects effected, of which there are many) so if you have a child taking GCSEs next year, please read the and respond if you feel your child may be adversely effected.

20 February 2024 A rather delayed update but lots of good news, mainly that I have been busy delivering classes over recent months, with students in primary schools, secondary, Sixth Form and in the services.

The UK Government has pushed ahead with changes to the MFL GCSEs leading to a new specification and teaching starting in September 2024 for Year 10.  I have been busy attending exam training with the exam boards over recent months, along with attending more specialised training.  After three years as a German Speaking Volunteer in a local grammar school, I decided I needed to focus on the increased demand for one to one teaching and so far things are going really well.

I offer:

GCSE French and German – these are my most in demand courses.  I enjoy supporting students as they study the course in school, until they finally take their exams and message me their results.  I am always thrilled and proud of the progress they achieve.  I have been an examiner for one of the exam boards for the last three years.

A Level French and German – teaching the content and skills required of this course about the French/German speaking world, involving the study of one film and one other piece of literature, typically a play.

Key Stage 3 French and German – some of my students work with me from Year 9.  Others continue on from Key Stage 2 and complete the ISEB 13+ entrance exams for which a modern foreign language is a requirement.

Key Stage 2 French and German – visiting teacher to local independent schools

Adult Education French and German – in recent years I have taught Beginners and Intermediate French to adults, along with topics from the German as a Foreign Language course to members of the British Army and A Level to Degree transition classes.

I keep myself up to date with developments in these countries via events from organisations such as the Goethe Institut and online resources.   Last year I managed a visit to Cologne (taking in Fasching), Heidelberg, Munich and Salzburg followed by a second trip to CERN near Geneva.
